Williamsons Department Store was on this corner.
They sold clothing, furniture upstairs, and groceries in the
Eastern portion of their two story brick building. In a small space East of Williamsons was Birchers Jewelry and Watch Repair shop. This was followed by the Congress Hotel, Oasis Cafe and then the movie Theater. The hotel rooms were above the businesses at street level. The building which still stands on the end of the block was a J.C. Penny dry goods store when I was a youngster. Both Pennys and Wiliamsons had the sales clerks sending the money up wires to the mezzanine to the cashier above. When Pennys left town their space became Hendersons Hardware. Later Tom Henderson opened a small liquor store in the back of the hardware store. After the hardware store it was transformed into the local Drug Store and Pharmacy. Now it is the Community Center and the mezzanine has been hidden by a false ceiling. Below is a photograph of this block which was taken in approximately 1920. ![]() |
