The list of Italian sculptors whose works
have come down to us and whose names are renowned is long. It
includes such names as Donatello, Michelangelo, Giambologna,
Cellini, and Canova. Italy has also been the home of a multitude
of talented sculptors whose works have come down to us but whose
names are meaningless or unknown. Many have worked or are still
working in the studios at Pietrasanta and Carrara close to the
source of the marble. Abbandonata is the product of one of those
artists; but like many art works of ancient Greece, the sculptor
remains unidentified. |
